Applying to WSCU

International Student Applicants

WSCU attracts students from across the United States and more than 15 different countries. Our students are attracted to the small classes, WSCU's dedicated faculty and the surrounding environment.

Well-trained and caring international student advisors help you meet the challenges of study in the U.S. by providing pre-arrival assistance information on visas, registration, orientation, housing, as well as advising on personal and cross-cultural matters.

International students seeking admission must submit an application for admission, and high school and/or college transcripts. All documents appearing in a language other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations. Students can be considered for admission Fall, Spring, or Summer. Completed application forms must be on file with the Admissions Office by June 1st for admittance for the Fall semester, and by November 1st for the Spring semester.

You are considered an international student only if you will apply for or already have a non-immigrant United States F-1 visa. Applicants who have established permanent resident status in the U.S. are not considered international for admission purposes and should apply as a U.S. resident.

Admission Requirements

Academic

In addition to the materials included in the application instructions, applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English and provide an official transcript of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IETLS.

Minimum acceptable TOEFL scores are as follows:

  • iBT: 79-80
  • Paper Version: 550
  • Computer-Based Test: 213

OR

  • IELTS scores
  • Minimum of 6.5 is required.
  • This requirement may be waived for international students who are transferring with at least 24 credits from a U.S. college or university and have successfully completed a college level English Composition course with a 3.0 or better.

Applicants whose native language is English are not required to submit results of an English proficiency test.

If your native language is English and you have completed less than 30 college/university credits, you will need to submit ACT or SAT test scores.

U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Documentation

Western State Colorado University and the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement require that admitted students planning to enter the U.S. on an F-1 (student) visa provide proof of financial support before immigration documents (I-20) can be issued. Proof of the ability to cover the first year’s educational costs, living expenses and other miscellaneous expenses must be made available to the University.

You should complete the Affidavit of Support Form and include it with your application for Admission to WSCU.

Financial documents must be submitted via email. Emailed or faxed copies of financial documents will not be accepted.

Once you are accepted as a student to WSCU, you will need to provide:

  • A letter of financial support and a bank statement showing sufficient funds to cover the first year of study.
  • A photocopy of the applicant's passport listing official name, birth date, etc.
  • If the applicant is in the U.S., a photocopy of the visa and I-94 on which the applicant entered the country.

International Student Application Instructions

Freshman Application Instructions
  1. Complete and submit WSCU’s Online Application.
  2. Submit the $30 application fee (can be paid online with the online application).
  3. Send official copies of all secondary transcripts (in language of original issue), including dates of attendance, all subjects studied, and grades earned and marks achieved on examinations. Any transcript not issued in English should be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  4. Submit a list of all high school or college-credit courses you are currently taking, or will take prior to attending WSCU.
  5. Include the results of your English proficiency exam (TOEFL or IELTS) if your native language is not English.
  6. Include your ACT or SAT test results if your native language is English.

Optional information includes an essay (typed, double-spaced) on a topic of your choice and letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors or others who can speak to your academic ability, character and ability to succeed.

Transfer Application Instructions
  1. Complete and submit WSCU’s Online Application.
  2. Submit the $30 application fee (can be paid online with the online application).
  3. Have official transcripts from each college you’ve attended sent directly to WSCU.
    If you have completed more than two full years of University study, no High School records are needed. Otherwise, secondary transcripts are required.
    Send official copies of your transcripts (in language of original issue), including dates of attendance, all subjects studied, and grades earned and marks achieved on examinations. Any transcript not issued in English should be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  4. Students seeking transfer credit for University work outside of the United States must submit transcripts to a NACES member credential evaluation service for a course by course evaluation. For a complete list of members go to http://www.naces.org or http://www.aacrao.com. All transfer credit evaluation fees are at the student expense. Additional course information, such as translated syllabus or course descriptions may be required.
  5. Include the results of your English proficiency exam (TOEFL or IELTS) if English is not your native language. This requirement may be waived for international students who are transferring with at least 24 credits from a U.S. college or university and have successfully completed a U.S. college level English composition course with a 3.0 or higher.
  6. If English is your native language and you have earned under 30 credit hours, include your ACT or SAT test scores.
