Sustainability

Earth Tub at Western State Colorado University

Through a partnership with Sodexo, WSCU composts much of the dining services preparation waste and food scraps by diverting compostable materials into an Earth Tub composting system.

At Western State Colorado University, we value the skills and outcomes to create a more sustainable society.

WSCU’s formal environmental charter demonstrates its commitment to improve awareness. The College has pledged to reduce 20 percent of its 2006 CO2 levels by 2020 and to obtain carbon neutrality by 2050.

WSCU strives to meet LEED gold standards in its new construction and LEED silver in renovation projects.

WSCU is a charter member of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. More than 600 colleges have joined us in this pledge.

Student Actions

Students worked with campus dining partner Sodexo on a plan for a pulper system for the student dining hall. The new system reduced the volume of food refuse by 85 percent.

Multiple, paid student sustainability coordinators, a student managed sustainability fund and a community garden and green house are among the projects supported and lead by student interest.

Regardless of the weather, bikes and skateboards are the preferred transportation method for WSCU students
