Tenderfoot Mountain (a.k.a. “W” Mountain) is home to one of the oldest human dwellings in North America, dating back more than 12,350 years. The site serves as a learning laboratory for field work and ongoing research for WSCU’s anthropology program.
Western State Colorado University is the oldest public liberal arts college west of the Mississippi River.
WSCU’s huge “W”, located on Tenderfoot Mountain, overlooks Gunnison and is the largest collegiate symbol in the world.
At 7,700 feet above sea level, WSCU has the highest elevation of any 4-year college in the United States.
WSCU’s mountain rescue team is the only collegiate certified mountain rescue team in the country. They conduct search and rescue missions throughout Colorado.
Nestled in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Western State Colorado University offers you a unique sense of community and academic experiences that will challenge and change you.
At WSCU, learning isn't limited to the classroom. Every activity offers you rich options and opportunities. You'll work closely with your professors and engage in your chosen profession. Explore new ideas and places as your research takes you to 13,000 feet. Stretch yourself and your perceptions of our world’s challenges and find solutions.
“Western has been the right fit for me because it has provided with me with many opportunities to jump-start my career. One of my internships was working as a hydrologic technician for the Bureau of Land Management.”
